It's 1:37am and we just got back from the vets...

It was time to say goodbye to Darla.

I knew something was terribly wrong when she had a grand mal seizure at 5:00am this morning.

She still had her appetite, but 2 hours later vomited up the small 1/4 cup of food. She was also looking thin. She dropped down to 17.5 lbs. She was always a sturdy 22lbs.

She played a little with Gracie this afternoon then hung her head as if she were in pain.

Then later this evening another grand mal. Unable to keep food down again. A third grand mal 2 hours later and we knew it was time. Her liver was failing and no amount of supplements or special diet would help her anymore. Seizure medication strains the liver even more, so that was out of the question.

As I sit here and type through all my tears I wonder what am I going to do without her? She was my furry best friend for 12 years. She was by my side for all of those 12 years too. Wherever I went, Darla was right behind me. Now she is gone.

Although I know in my heart it was the right thing to do, I'm struggling with some guilt. I know most who have to make this horrid decision about their dying, beloved pets do.

I am also worried about Gracie. She is alone now. They were best pals. When we brought her home Hannah didn't want anything to do with her, but Darla did. They bonded immediately.

My hubs is grateful she made it past my birthday. Having her still here was the best gift I could ever have. For that I am grateful.

I snapped this pic this afternoon. She was such a pretty girl.

She was such a little dew drop when we brought her home.

We're having her cremated. They will call when she's ready to come back home, where she belongs. I am comforted in knowing she and Hannah are able to pal around again.

But dear Lord, I miss her so!

My heart goes out to you. Our little furry ones are such a part of the family. I understand the hole that is left when it is their time to go. My Lilly left 4 years ago and I still miss her. My thoughts are with you.

Karin, I am so sorry for the grief you are feeling. You will be able to find comfort in the wonderful memories you have of your sweet Darla but right now it's all so raw. Your life was blessed with her companionship. Please remember, you were there for her when she needed you most... do not waste your energy with guilt. I don't think your Darla would approve of that at all.

Peanut please know Chuck & I are thinking of you 2. Its not been but a few months ago we had to have Goldie PTS and just as you -do, I felt guilt ,thinking maybe there was something else I could have done but as you know, you & I did all we could for our furbabies. And what matters most is the love we shared with them. And knowing they are no longer suffering. My deepest sympthy to you & your hubby. Hugs, Pam

...Oh dearest Karin, I am so, so sorry. My heart goes out to you in every way. It was her time but I know that does little to comfort a broken heart but please know that you gave her the BEST years she could of had and she loved you and you loved her - there is nothing more that she could have wanted.

...I know you are hurting right now and there are no words that can make it go away. Just know that she is running pain free and that she is with you in memory and in spirit. Always.

...Sending you a (((hug))), warm wishes and a prayer too.

...Blessings my friend.

I am so sorry to read this. I still get choked up when I remember that adorable picture of Hannah looking out the window. Every time someone loses a pet, I grieve for mine all over. Seems to never leave. It doesn't matter that you did the right thing. Reasons or events cannot affect the emptiness. Someone told me that other pets need to sniff the deceased or their ashes to understand why they are gone. All of you have my deepest sympathy.

Thank you all for your kind words and prayers.
Darla was truly a once in a lifetime special furbaby. I never had a more loving and loyal four legged best friend. She taught me so much. ♥
