My Rustoleum Countertop Transformations Update...

Well, it's been three and a half years since I "transformed" my kitchen countertop.

How has it held up??

Not bad. Not bad at all. Mind you, it's just my sweet hubs and I so not a whole heck of a lot of wear and tear going on.

I will say I never cut directly on the countertop and always used a cutting board and trivets. But my sweet hubs did cut directly on it once and when he did, he made a small slice in it. But after all this time the texture has lifted off slightly. Again, not bad at all. Especially for the price of the product.

There are some spots where it chipped off.

Some spots wore off along the seams.

I was considering doing it again. But I'm also thinking about getting a new countertop instead. Like I've mentioned in the past it was a lot of hard work to transform the countertop and quite frankly I'm too old and too tired to do it again.

Granite, quartz and marble are the hot trends for countertops. But as lovely as they are, I'm not sure about them. Besides the obvious high price, I'm not a fan of shiny, glossy countertops. Yes they are gorgeous but our home is very much lived in. It would be covered in fingerprints and hand smears and that's not so gorgeous.
((giggle))
I love the look of a wood countertop. But I know I would spend my time worrying about any drop of water or liquid sitting on it.
(I do that now with my free standing butcher block.)

I have seen some wonderful laminate countertops in Formica 180fx and Wilsonart HD. They've come a long way from our 80's laminate countertop. Truth be told, as dated and unattractive as our white countertop was, there were no chips or cracks in it.

Here's a blast from the past...

I ordered and received some laminate countertop samples and will share with you in my next post.

In the meantime, if anyone wants to put in their 2 cents about their countertops (pros and cons-laminate to quartz) please feel free to chime in. I'd truly appreciate your comments.

  1. So glad your counters have held up so well...I've always wondered how that product worked over time. You are so right - laminate has come along way and there are alot of beautiful styles out there. And they wear like iron! Although I do have granite, I think laminate is a great choice and am planning to use it in two of my bathrooms. Jane

  2. A few years ago, we redid our countertops with Allen + Roth solid surface from Lowe's. It's been almost three years, and I still love them. Not super shiny, and they've held up well. My best friend liked them so much she did hers in the same color. Here are a few pictures if you want to have a look:

  3. Jane, may I ask if you've had any chipping or cracking with your granite? I am so rough on my countertop edges and wondered if they chipped off or cracked easily.
Erin, I didn't realize Allen + Roth did countertops. I must live under a rock! Your counter looks beautiful! I'm going to take a peek at their site.
Thanks again, ladies!!! I appreciate your input. :> )

  4. Peanut, I had laminate counter tops in the 1840 house and I loved them!
So many beautiful options in laminate these days.

  5. Really, Audrey??!! I didn't know that! Ladies, if you've never visited Audrey's blog, it's a must! Not only is she an extremely talented artist (I have many of her wonderful dolls), she is amazing at interior decorating! She's also a fellow Craigslist addict. ((giggle)) Unfortunately I never got over to visit her when she lived here in New York State. But here's a link to her beautiful home when she was a New Yorker. ♥ http://b-r-child.blogspot.com/search?updated-min=2010-01-01T00:00:00-05:00&updated-max=2011-01-01T00:00:00-05:00&max-results=50

  6. We have butcher block counter tops. They have taken a lot of normal wear and tear but we don't cut on them or hot pots. We have had to refinish them once in all the many years they have been in place and they really need redoing again. That seems to be the only drawback is the refinishing part. I am considering quartz next time around because of the wide selection of colors and finishes.

  7. What are they refinished with? I have read some are sealed and some are oiled. I use mineral oil on my maple butcher block every few months. I do love a butcher block countertop. ♥ I've seen some beautiful quartz countertops too. I have so many questions to ask when I talk to the salesperson. He's
probably going to wish he never waited on me. ((giggle)) ;> )

  8. Hey, there! I know you know from my Pinterest board I have obsessed about this! ha ha ha. I ordered some a Formica laminate in matte finish which will be installed in late August. I wanted to brighten my kitchen up, but wanted the least amount of disruption possible. I decided the biggest change would be taking OUT the 30 year old black laminate countertops. They show everything! I'm replacing it with Formica in a light gray concrete pattern. I did not want to put a pricey countertop on top of my 30 year old cabinets. Because someday I might do the gut renovation I have dreamed of. I'll take pictures when it is done. :-)

  10. Dixie you are so right. My kitchen cabinets are well over 30 years old and spending the $$ on a high end countertop doesn't make much sense to me. That is unless a complete remodel is done. So what Formica color did you get? Did you go with the 180fx line? Please share photos after it's installed!! Cant wait to see!!!
P.S. Thanks so much for the kind words. ♥
