In need of...

for my little Stella. She had three bad seizures on Saturday. We rushed her to the vets. So now we must begin to try to figure out what the cause is. The vets seems to think it's idiopathic epilepsy. Which basically means they have no idea what causes the seizures. Those who know me, know that that is a diagnosis I can't except. There is always a cause and I want to know what it is.

She had one back in April. A very mild one in June. Then on Saturday.
So now it's a matter of trying to rule things out. She'll have a bile acid test tomorrow to check her liver function. I can't imagine a dog under the age of 4 having liver damage. But then again, I feel the same way about seizures.
Our little Gracie has had seizures. There is something wrong.

Man, I am having such a difficult time dealing with this. Why are so many of our beloved pets having seizures? Or bad health problems for that matter. Growing up, I never heard of anyone's dog having such severe medical problems as they do now and they always lived to a very ripe old age.

So I ask all of you who follow this blog (and Stella's blog) to please keep her in your prayers. She is such a sweet precious little girl. Full of love and life.
Positive thoughts are also greatly appreciated, too.

Thank you.

  1. Dear Karin, I had tears in my eyes as I read your post. I know how much you love Stella and how much she means to you and your husband. I read both your blogs and feel as if I know Stella personally. I periodically will reread them just because I enjoy reading about her and seeing her beautiful, animated face so much. I will definitely being praying for her. Keep us posted.

  3. Hi Karin. How is our little patient doing? How are you? My mother had a Scottie when she was a child that had seizures. That was 70 years ago. Back then they were less interested in the cause than the effect. Mom said that they could tell when Rags was going to have one, as he started acting funny-unlike himself. They just tried to keep him comfortable and safe. My Indy had a seizure the day that my dad died, but that was caused by trauma.
I remember that Stella hurt her spine a few years ago, could that cause it? Also, I know that she has many allergies, could that be a part?
I know that Stella is in good hands with a mommy who loves her and will not rest until she finds the cause.
We'll all continue to pray for you both. Please give both Stella and Gracie a hug and a kiss from me.
    God bless.

  4. Thank you so much ladies. That means the world to me. ♥

She slept through the night just fine. Me on the other hand... no such luck.
I brought her in for a fasting blood draw. Then they gave her some canned high calorie food (which she never eats) and I have to bring her back for another draw. I'll be ready for the "butt fireworks" to happen when that food passes through. ;> )

Phyllis, I get so frustrated. It is large practice with 10 vets and it's always someone new who sees her. The same questions are asked and I answer them the same way. But never get any answers. Sigh.
I'm not sure if the spinal injury could be related.
My hubs thinks it's because she's so hyperactive. Her brain is constantly going. Even when she sleeps she is very animated. Who knows??
I'll keep you posted on her blood work results. Thanks, again. ♥

  5. Karin, I was just reading a book in which an artist was using a face mask while spray painting. I know that you have a studio, but is there any chance that some fumes could bother Stella? This is just a shot in the dark.

  6. Phyllis, I don't do any spray painting inside our farmhouse. It's done either outside or in the barn away from both humans and canines. I am still wracking my brain trying to pinpoint the source of her seizures.

  7. I just remembered I did spray paint the wood stove chimney pipe. But room was blocked off from everyone and windows open. :> )

  8. Hi Karin. I know that you are always careful, but was grasping as straws I guess. Hopefully, you'll find out something soon. I know how terrifying the seizures are and how helpless you feel when you don't know what's wrong and how to fix it. Keep strong. My love to the girls.

  9. ...Oh Miss Karin, I am so sorry to hear of this! Hopefully the test will show something as to what is causing this. I can't imagine and my heart goes out to you.

...Please know I'm sending prayers and positive energy your way! Miss Stella is way to full of life, love, and feistyness to be dealing with this and to allow it to get the better of her.

...I agree regarding the health of today's pets. Like you stated, something is going on when you compare the health of our pets today compared to when we were growing up. And really the same goes for the human race too. It's scary and makes you wonder about our futures. :o/

...Please keep us posted on her progress and hang in there Mr. & Mrs. Countryfolk! (((hug)))

    ...Peace & blessings.
