It rained and rained and rained and rained...

Early yesterday morning here in Central New York, four counties including ours were devastated by heavy flooding. Something like I've never seen in these parts, ever. At least in my lifetime.

Since we live on a bit of a hill (thank the good Lord above) our home was spared. Just a little water in our basement. But many of our friends and neighbors were not.

It was so bad, my sweet hubs was unable to get to work yesterday.
All the roads were either closed or impassable.

Here are some sights around the four counties.

Childhood memories...

You all know I'm a Craigslist junkie. I search daily for stuff I don't need. I compare it to going to estate sales or barn sales minus the wasted gas from driving all over.

Well, when I was looking around on the site I came across a huge blast from the past!

You ready to see it??

Holy patchwork, Batman!

Please don't adjust the color on your monitor, you are seeing it correctly.

This was the furniture pattern my parents bought back in the 1970's. I remember them going to Montgomery Wards and picking out the set. Although we did not have this rocker. We had the couch and loveseat.

When I saw the rocker for sale it threw me right back in time. It was wonderful! Heck, I can't believe what great shape it's in!!

I immediately emailed the link to my mother to get her reaction.

When I talked to her, her response was, "What was I thinking when I picked out that pattern with those colors??!!" We both laughed.

I have no idea what she was thinking, but I came really close to buying it for myself! I guess it is true when they say "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree."

Maybe this is why I've always had a love for patchwork.

Happy Tuesday, everyone.

"I Want You!!"

Actually, it's not me, it's more like Uncle Sam.
Then again....
Technically, it's more like Uncle Sam's pointing finger.

Today is FLAG DAY...

 photo flaghouse4_zps16c4021b.jpg

I Wave My Flag
by Roger W Hancock

On Flag Day, I wave my flag,
flag of American liberty.
Independence day, of course, I’ll wave,
birthday of our liberty.
Memorial day my flag will wave,
lives now gone for liberty.
Veteran’s day I’ll wave it too,
for all who serve for liberty.
Other days my flag conveys,
pride, appreciation of liberty.
I need no reason to wave my flag,
I wave my flag in liberty.

Unsure how to display your American flag?
Here's a link to American flag etiquette.

Happy Flag Day, all.
Wave your flag in liberty and teach our younger generations.

Am I brave enough?

About 8 years ago, I special ordered a Laz-Z-Boy Rocker/Glider/Recliner.
At the time I had a beautifully reupholstered vintage wing back Ethan Allen couch, so I wanted a wing back Rocker/Glider/Recliner to coordinated with it.

Since the couch fabric was off white, tomato red and moss green plaid, I thought I'd go with a tomato red fabric on the chair.

Well... After a few years of dogs, a husband and sitting near a window
(have I mentioned a husband?!) ; my tomato red chair turned into this hideous, faded, dirty, pinkish-red "OMG what the heck was I thinking when I bought this" eyesore.

 photo 0e1b3743-53f4-4b6b-85fc-22e7d7643686_zpsa793547d.jpg

I was so embarrassed by it, it had to go. But this chair is so comfortable!! I really didn't want to get rid of it?
Besides, who would want it??
So upstairs in the den it did go.

I looked into slipcovers, but no one makes them for wing back rocker/glider/recliners. Just for sh*ts and giggles I did purchase regular wing back chair slipcovers. Hoping they would somehow fit.
Let's just it was like cramming a Sumo wrestler into full body spandex unitard.

I have thought about having it reupholstered. But after dishing out a small fortune for Stella's vet bill on Sunday, and her upcoming spaying surgery the end of this month, my mad money stash has all but disappeared now.

The question is, do I tackle the reupholstering myself?!
Heck, I've always been one to fly by the seat of my pants when it comes to projects, but for some reason this project intimidates me.

Maybe it's because I have the attention span of a flea and don't think I could focus on it long enough to make it look right.

Has anyone out there tackled a project like this with no experience? Please feel free to throw in your two cents.

And don't be surprised if I swipe those two cents and throw it back in my mad money stash. ((giggle))

Happy Tuesday!

"Make Me Smile" Monday...

What better way to start out a new week than with a morning smile.

Sure, my hubs and my furbabies always make me smile.
But there are some things I intentionally place around the house to make me (and others who visit) smile.

Here is an example of one of those things.

It's my little potato vegetable brush guy.
Inne cute?
He sits on the window sill right above the kitchen sink.

Are you smiling?

I knew it.

Happy Monday, all.

Remember to smile every day of the week.

I'm not ready for the rubber room yet...

because I still need to paint the stairs.

But here's a peek at my freshly painted living room.
Heck, I even decluttered some wall space. YaY me!

 photo liv01_zpsf5bd3122.jpg

Between you and me
(and now the National Security Agency) I regret letting my hubs pick out that couch.
Oh well... You live and learn.

Happy Saturday, all!

I'm still being chased by the guys with the big butterfly net.
But I'm too quick for 'em!

Wednesday, June 5, 2013

I swear, my hubs is going to call the guys ...

in the white jackets with the big butterfly net.

Remember last year when I had an A.D.D. moment while I was baking chocolate chip cookies?
I wondered what was underneath the blue carpeting in the den so I thought I would pull back a tiny piece of carpet to take a peek and I did this...

Well I kinda had another A.D.D. moment today. This time it was when I was painting one of my birdies.
Since I love the new light color I painted the upstairs hallway, I wondered how the living room would look in that color. Since we moved in, I've always painted it some shade of muted green.

Well... I thought I would dab a little, tiny bit of paint on the wall and...

 photo living_zpseda83d79.jpg

I warned my hubs when he walked through the door that I did "something" in the living room. His exact words were, "Oh my God, what did you do now?!"

I'm pretty sure he was sizing me up for the perfect fit for my new straight jacket.
I hope it comes in red. Red is my color.

Ummm... I'll be spending the next few days painting my living room walls that wonderful new color.

Happy Wednesday night, all!

I'll snap pics when I'm done.

I've been a painting fool...

yet again.

The upstairs in this old farmhouse really needs some attention. We haven't done anything major since we moved in.

Maybe it's because I'm a little shell shocked from our last major upstairs remodel we did back in our first house. I had a contractor tear everything down to the studs. It was all lath and plaster too. If you have lath and plaster, you know exactly the nightmare I'm talking about. I was still finding and cleaning up plaster dust a year after the remodel.

This old farmhouse is also lath and plaster. Not only does that terrify me, the thought of what is behind these old lath and plaster walls terrifies me even more. I just about messed my drawers when my hubs tore down the drop ceiling in our living room and tiny dinosaur-like mouse skeletons (still intact) fell all around me.

So until I get the nerve up to do another major remodel, I decided to re-re-re-paint the hallway. This time I went with a wonderful color by Behr called "Cozy Cottage." It a light beige. Not too yellow, not too green and not too orange.

It's really hard to find a true beige but this one does the trick. Then I painted the trim a nice, clean white. I also painstakingly painted the spindles on the railing. Dear Lord!! Talk about needing the patience of Job for that job! Not only did it need 400 coats of primer, it needed about that same amount in paint.

 photo hallway1_zps37d0e79f.jpg

 photo 7e492a9d-6034-43bd-bd2c-3119fc585a15_zps2e394b18.jpg

Now that I look at these photos, I'm thinking I should have painted the posts white too and just left the railing the natural wood. Oh well. When I feel like applying 800 coats of primer and paint again, I'll consider it.

My next job will be to paint the old wood floors "Oat Straw." I love painted, old wood floors especially in bedrooms. They have a nice farmhousy/cottagy feel.

The whole time I painted, Stella was nothing but trouble. Who would have thought, right?
She got into everything.
She chews everything and anything. I spent more time chasing her down and removing stuff from her mouth than painting.

Here she is doing one of her favorite pastimes.
Chewing tags off of pillow cases.

Happy Monday, everyone!
Wishing you all a productive week!
